Verdie Marie McMurray Cook

Verdie Marie McMurray Cook, age 75, of Tazewell, TN, gained her Heavenly wings on Monday, April 15, 2024. She was born on September 18,1948, in Middlesboro, KY, to the late Arnold and Juanita Collins McMurray.

Verdie was the best mother and Nannie to her, and Pap’s, pack. She passed on her quick wit and love of thrifting and traveling. She will be loved and missed greatly. 

Verdie was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, SFC Rufus Cook; brother, Charles Eugene McMurray; sister, Barbara Capps; and sons-in-law, Lee Graves, and Adrian Witherspoon. 

She is survived by her daughters, Michelle Graves of Tazewell, TN, Angie Newman of Front Royal, VA, Jackie (Joe David) Massengill and Melissa Witherspoon of New Tazewell, TN; grandchildren, Jennifer (Derek) Smith, Joshua (Tabitha) Graves, Amanda Pelayo, Samantha Bolstridge, Dakota (Samantha) Massengill, Chelsea Witherspoon, Adrian Witherspoon II, Jared Massengill and Isaiah Cameron #9; and great-grandchildren, Jayla Bolstridge, Chloe Smith, Alijah James, Jamari Warren, Levi Ramsey, Kaylani Martin, Colin Massengill, Maliyah Witherspoon, Alexander Ramsey, Addy Smith, Lilyanna Ramsey, Tylon Burrill, Izabella Graves, Olivia Massengill, and Jaylen Ramsey as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

The family would like to thank the 2nd floor staff and physical and occupational therapy at Claiborne Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center for the wonderful care given to our mother before she returned home.  We are so glad that you all got to know and enjoy the real "Verdie"! 

The family of Verdie Marie McMurray Cook will receive friends on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Cawood Funeral Home Chapel, Middlesboro, KY. 

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Tim Cosby and Joe David Massengill presiding. Music will be provided by the McMurrays. At the conclusion of the funeral service, family and friends will follow in procession to Mountainview Cemetery, Harrogate, TN, where graveside services will be held. 

Pallbearers will be Joshua Graves, Dakota Massengill, Adrian Witherspoon II, Jared Massengill, Isaiah Cameron, Derek Smith, Alijah James, Jamari Warren, and Jason Capps. Honorary pallbearers will be Levi Ramsey, Colin Massengill, Alexander Ramsey, Tylon Burrill, and Jaylen Ramsey.
