Raymond Miller

May 29, 1924 — December 9, 2022

New Tazewell, TN

Raymond Miller, age 98, of New Tazewell, Tennessee, formerly of Pineville, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, December 9, 2022 while in the special care of Barbourville Health and Rehabilitation Center in Barbourville, Kentucky.

He was born on May 29, 1924 in Blackstar, Kentucky to the late Ogden and Viva Lunce Miller.  He was married to his loving wife of 64 years, Frances Harbin Miller, who preceded him in death. Frances led Raymond to the Lord and he was baptized at Riverside Baptist Church in Calvin, Kentucky, where he was a longtime member.  In recent years, he had been attending Midway Baptist Church in New Tazewell, Tennessee.

Raymond served in the United States Army for four years, having been stationed in England as well as Normandy, France.  For his service, he was awarded the European Theatre Medal with five battle stars.

He loved his family fiercely.  He especially enjoyed his time camping at the lake with Frances.  Old cars were a particular passion of his.  He owned his own semi while working with Childers Oil Company in Whitesburg, Kentucky where his trucking buddies used his handle, “papaw”, when talking to him.  Some time ago, Raymond posted a piece of paper on his refrigerator that stated, “Pam, do not bury me in a suit and tie.”  His wish is being happily respected.

In addition to his wife and parents, Raymond was preceded in death by his son, Raymond Terry Miller; infant twin brother, Ralph Miller; brothers, Jack and Willie Miller; sisters, Clara Miller and Elsie Maryanski; and son-in-law, Gary Ikerd.

He was a devoted and loving father to his surviving children, Joan Ikerd Nesler, of Mayfield, Kentucky, Phyllis (Tom) Siler, of Speedwell, Tennessee, Pam (Mark) Brooks of New Tazewell, Tennessee, daughter-in-law, Mary Miller of Pineville, Kentucky; grandchildren, Chris Miller, of Richmond, Kentucky, Beth (Brian) Mohon of Mayfield, Kentucky, Jason Miller of Pineville, Kentucky, Phillip Siler of Speedwell, Tennessee, and Madison Brooks of New Tazewell, Tennessee; great-grandchildren, Beau Mohon of Evansville, Indiana, Briley Mohon of Mayfield, Kentucky, Breece Ellen Mohon of Mayfield, Kentucky, Tayle Miller of Pineville, Kentucky, Terri Miller of Flat Lick, Kentucky, Regan Siler of Speedwell, Tennessee, and Junie Miller of Richmond, Kentucky.  His brother-in-law Larry Boone and a sister-in-law Muriel Harbin.  Also left to mourn his passing are Tim Pursifull of Pineville, Kentucky, who he loved like a son, as well as many other nieces, nephews and friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Veteran’s Affairs home based primary care and SCHAS homemakers, as well as his other caregivers, for their excellent care.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 15, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Cawood Funeral Home Chapel, Middlesboro, Kentucky.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2022 at the Cawood Funeral Home Chapel, Middlesboro, Kentucky with Reverend William Boyd Bingham and Reverend Ronnie Pressnell presiding.  Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Terry Christopher Miller, Jason Miller, Phillip Siler and Brian Mohon; nephews, Bill Harbin and Jim Mills; special Friends, Tim Pursifull and Tim Partin.  Honorary Pallbearers will be his Great Grandchildren, Beau Mohon, Briley Mohon, Tayle Miller, Terri Miller, Reagan Siler and Junie Miller.
