Maxzeina "Maxine" Asher

October 1, 1939 — May 16, 2024

Cumberland Gap

Maxzeina “Maxine” Asher, age 84, a longtime resident of Cumberland Gap, TN, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at The Lantern at Morning Pointe, Knoxville, TN.  She was born on October 2, 1939, in Harlan, KY to Bradley Asher, Sr. and Pauline Noe Asher, who preceded her in death.  Maxine was a 1957 graduate of Loyall High School, Loyall, KY. Four years later, on June 29, 1961, she married her husband of 53 years, the late T.J. Asher, in Lee County, VA.

Maxine worked as a finance loan manager for Kentucky Finance and World Finance in Middlesboro, KY, until the impressive age of 78.  She possessed exceptional business acumen along with a genuine care for people, which truly set her apart in her work.  She is remembered for her tenacity and grit when it was required while offering grace at the same time.  Maxine's words, “You better not let me down!” often resulted in a met expectation.  Her high standard for herself and others resulted in the acceptance of several achievement awards which served as a testament to her dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to her work.

Outside of work, Maxine’s favorite pastimes always revolved around her family, and often included spending time at her lake house on Norris Lake, TN, or vacationing together at Myrtle Beach, SC. She had a penchant for shopping and delighted in listening to country music-especially songs by Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Dolly Parton.  Her family’s history was particularly important to her. She found great pleasure in researching her ancestry and attending the annual Dillion Asher Reunion with her nieces Anita Herter, Felicia Couchman, and Julie Thomas.  Maxine held the distinction of being the last of her generation in her family.  Her heritage also included a love of her birthplace, Harlan, KY, and its people, which she never lost.

In addition to her husband and parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her brothers, Oland Asher and his wife Frances, Foley Asher and his wife, Bob, and Bradley “Babe Boy” Asher, Jr. and her sister, Judy Farley and her husband Norman.

Left to cherish Maxine’s memory are her children, Vickie (Robert) Van Dorselaer, Joe (Crystal) Asher, Gina (Greg) Williamson, and Jerry Asher; her grandchildren, who she adored, Nicholas Asher Price, Abigail Asher, J.T. Asher, and Jacob Burchett; and her great-granddaughter, Paisley Asher; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The Family of Maxine Asher will receive friends on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Cawood Funeral Home Chapel, Middlesboro, KY.  Funeral services will immediately follow at 7:00 p.m. with Reverend Tim Goins presiding.
