Martha Anne Smith, age 83, entered into eternal rest in the arms of the Lord on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

Martha lived a life defined by care, devotion, and an unmistakable spirit. A devout Catholic, her faith guided the way she lived and the compassion she showed to others. She was incredibly loving and devoted to her family and friends, ensuring they were always provided for and given plenty of reasons to laugh with her ready sense of humor.

Born in Monroe, Michigan, on June 26, 1942, she made her way to Eastern Tennessee where she built a life rooted in family, community, and love. It was here she began caring for children - originally so her son would always have someone to play with growing up - and what started as something small, grew into a lifelong calling. Over the years, Martha helped raise and care for generations of children, becoming a steady, loving presence in countless lives. There was always room for one more child in her home and heart and often a big pot of her famous rotini on the stove. No birthday ever went unnoticed in her care, with each child being celebrated with a homemade cake to feel special and loved.

Known for her caring nature, sharp wit, and strong will, Martha had a special way of making those around her feel looked after. She left a lasting impression on all who knew her. Her legacy lived on in the many lives she touched with gentle hands and a generous heart.

Martha was preceded in death by her father and mother, Thomas Leo and Aletha Elva (Aiston) Smith; her brothers, Norman, Robert and James Smith; and her sisters, Doris Clanin and Dorothy Bologh. She is also survived by her son, Rockey Couarm; grandchildren, Alisha Couarm, Shyanne Couarm and Tony Merida; and many nieces, nephews, and family friends.

In accordance with her wishes, the family will not be holding a formal service. Martha’s life will be best remembered through the small moments when she showed her love freely. Those who wish to honor her memory are encouraged to do so by sharing a memory, cooking a comforting meal for someone who needs it, or offering kindness in her spirit.
