Mark Alan Rector, age 67, of Pikeville, KY, passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. He was born February 3, 1958, in Middlesboro, KY, the son of the late William Bolton Rector and Margaret Ann Rector.
Mark was raised in Hazard, KY, where he attended Hazard High School. His time there was marked not only by his academic pursuits but also by a fervent involvement in sports, including football, baseball, and basketball. He was known for his compassionate spirit; Mark had a deep love for both people and animals. His quick wit and profound appreciation for life were evident in every interaction he shared with those around him.
An artist at heart, Mark possessed a naturally gifted talent that was recognized early in his life, culminating in a scholarship to an art institute in Cincinnati. Although he chose not to fully pursue a career in music and arts, his love and appreciation for a great song and the artistic stroke of God’s hand on the beauty in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky nestled in the hills of Pikeville, remained ever-present.
He found joy in the simple pleasures offered by life, where he was surrounded by nature and the warmth of good neighbors. It was here that Mark settled into a life contented by laughter of a good friend and the smile on the face of a stranger. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his nephew, Daniel Todd Rector.
He is survived by his son, Shane Rector; daughter, Shauna Rector and spouse, Timothy Oakes; granddaughters, Kayleigh and Harley Oakes; great-grandson, Christian Russell; brother, Steve Todd Rector; and a host of other relatives and friends.
At this time, the family has chosen not to hold services but encourages all who knew Mark to share their fond memories of him.
