On Tuesday, November 23rd, Brenda Gayle Carithers, of Dacula, GA was called home into the loving arms of Jesus. She’s now a proud member of his heavenly choir and enjoying the fruits of her ever-present faith. Gayle was a member of Norcross First Baptist Church and then Lawrenceville First Baptist Church.
Gayle was preceded in death by parents Clyde and Nannie Mae Nevils of Claiborne County, TN.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Bruce Carithers of Dacula; children Rich Carithers and Jeanie White, Ashley Carithers Black and James Black, her two grandchildren, Sam Black and Luke Black, that had become the center of her universe, known to them as “Mimi”; sister, Sherrie Nevils Claiborne, former brother-in-law, David Claiborne of Claiborne County, TN and brother Dr. Richard Nevils and wife Jana, of Claiborne County, TN; nieces Kristen Claiborne Tompkins and husband Destin of Nashville, TN, along with their children Claiborne and Shelby; Andrea Nevils Wieck and husband Paul, of Nashville, TN, along with their children Trey, Hunter and Noah; Emily Nevils of Nashville, TN, cousin Michael Chadwell of Knoxville, TN, along with his children Parker and Hailey, and numerous relatives by marriage from Walton County.
Born in the shadow of the Cumberland Gap area of the Appalachian Mountains, Gayle went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Lincoln Memorial University and master’s from Walden University in Education. She was a lifelong educator working in the Claiborne County School District, Head Start of Gwinnett County, and ultimately 30 years with the Gwinnett County School District. Gayle also had a talent and love of playing the piano and organ throughout her life.
The celebration of Gayle’s life will be held on Tuesday, November 30th, 2021, at 11:00 am at Lawrenceville First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends on Monday, November 29th from 5pm to 8pm at Tom Wages Lawrenceville Chapel. Interment will be held on Wednesday, December 1st at 2pm at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Harrogate, TN. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation at https://gcps-foundation.org/donation.
