Alyce Jo Pennington

April 22, 1927 — June 19, 2025

Alyce Jo (Steely) Pennington, age 98, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 19, 2025.

She was born April 22, 1927, in Pineville, Kentucky to Clarence and Mildred Steely and raised by her grandparents, Everett and Martha Steely. In addition to her parents and grandparents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude A. Pennington, Jr. and her son-in-law, George J. Manovich.

Alyce was employed with Commonwealth Life Insurance Company for thirty-nine years prior to her retirement. She was a former member of First Baptist Church in Pineville, Kentucky, and a member of the former Old Yellow Creek Baptist Church in Middlesboro, Kentucky. Granny Jo, as she was affectionately called by her family, will be remembered for her gentle manner, sweet smile, and kind heart. She listened more than she spoke and gave more than she received. She had an endearing sense of humor and fun. Her love for her family and dedication to her Christian faith set a shining example to all who knew her.

She is survived by her family: son and daughter-in-law, Claude A. Pennington III and Christine of Jonesville, Virginia; daughter, Catherine G. Manovich of Harrogate, Tennessee; daughter and son-in-law, Elaine Pennington Gilbert and Jerry of Pineville, Kentucky; grandchildren, Stephen E. Pennington (Jennifer) of Nicklesville, Virginia; Jeffrey K. Hendrickson of Fremont, Ohio; Erin Kathleen Turley (Wes) of Winchester, Kentucky; great-grandsons, Stephen Michael Pennington (Jillian) and Jarvis Pennington of Nicklesville, Virginia, and Ryan Wesley Turley of Winchester, Kentucky; great-granddaughters, Riley Elizabeth Turley (Ethan Anderson) of Lexington, Kentucky and Emma Kathryn Turley of Winchester, Kentucky; and great-great-granddaughter, Everly Rose Anderson of Lexington, Kentucky.
